I think he enjoyed these first few days of school. He has visited with all of his classmates and friends, and he is meeting new people. Very good for his socialization...and all without tears so far. Yea!

therapy...the fun way
I took Michael to Autumn Rose Farm for his first horseback riding lesson (also called Hippotherapy). His trainer was Ashley, who worked really well with him. The first few lessons will be to get him used to a horse and to strengthen his balance. Actually, the first part was trying to get him okay with wearing a helmet...he wanted nothing to do with that in the beginning.
He seemed to do pretty well when the horse was walking around the corral/arena, so she had the horse go a little faster. I could hear Michael making some happy noises and I could see him smiling when they passed by me.
So she had the horse go even faster...kind of looked like a trot to me, not really galloping...but what do I know about horses? Nada. Anyhow...it was a pretty good clip. By then, Michael's poor little head was bouncing all around.
After riding around for 20 minutes or so at these 3 various paces, Michael signed all done and was starting to pout a little bit. I think we'll try it again some time soon to see if he really likes it.

game night and camp out
The grand part started to disappear when we had to ask Gary to help us put up the tent. Ashley told him that we couldn't do it because we're girls (what-ev-er!). Anyhow, Gary and I couldn't figure out my mom's tent: there were no directions, a couple of things were missing, and the darn thing was all sticky (she thinks it might have been put away wet). After a quick phone call to my mom, we have success!
Our wonderful neighbors lugged their firepit to our yard and even gave us some of their firewood (thanks a ton!).
We're all set for the festivities now. First up, was our family game night with birthday girl, Ashley, picking out all of the games for the evening (we'll have to remember to do this with Dillon on his bday).
Then comes birthday cake. We love us some good birthday cake. Michael helped himself to some icing when Tina brought the cake to the table.

buzz boy
As I was preparing for the big event, I made a pile at the top of the stairs: clippers, check; towel, check; Mickey Mouse on DVR for distraction, check. I left said pile and started a bath for the hair flying aftermath. That was when I heard it. The clanging and banging. There went the pile of stuff down the stairs. I should have known better. That is one of Michael's favorite things to do...throw/roll things down the stairs. The clippers didn't make it through the event, they broke into 3 pieces.
I hunt down G's trimmer and set the dial to what I guess is the appropriate number and length. Michael wouldn't let me get a test strip and I would have to be quick about the whole cutting/buzzing thing lest there be an all out war in our house. So my first pass on his head was right down the middle. Uh-oh....it's short. Really short. Crap. And it's not like I could readjust the number and have him struttin' around with...with...what would be the opposite of a mohawk? A no-hawk??
As I continued cutting his hair, I rationalized the butchering that was taking place:
- it's still summertime and this will keep him cool
- it'll be the perfect length when school pictures roll around in September
- he won't have to suffer through another haircut for quite awhile
- it was his fault for breaking the clippers...probably on purpose too (it couldn't have been my fault for leaving them out)
- it is waaay easier to style
- he definitely won't be able to twirl his hair
- he looks pretty darn spiffy with short hair
So by the time I finished cutting his hair, I wasn't feeling guilty at all and thought it turned out fine......very short, but fine.

mm-mmm goodness
Her dish was so delicious, I asked for her recipe. She chuckled to herself while giving me a sly grin and said that her recipe has a secret ingredient in it and that I would never guess what it is. She then made me guess a few times and I was wrong on every attempt. Do you see what her secret ingredient is? Kind of makes sense that it would be in there.
chicken enchiladas
INGREDIENTS
1 can Cream of Chicken soup
1 TBSP cocoa
½ cup water
1 bottle (6 oz) mild green chili salsa
¾ cup finely chopped celery
½ teaspoon ground cumin
2 cups shredded cooked chicken
1 ½ cups shredded Mexican-style cheese
1 ¼ cups thawed frozen corn
1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies
12 corn tortillas
TOPPINGS
2 cups shredded lettuce
1 cup diced tomato
½ cup diced red onion
8 oz. Sour cream
DIRECTIONS
In one bowl, mix: soup, cocoa, and water. Stir in, mild green chili salsa, celery, and cumin.
In a 2nd larger bowl, combine: chicken, cheese, corn, and green chilies.
Combine 3/4th the bowl of sauce and the bowl of chicken mixture, reserving the remaining 1/4th of sauce to pour over the top.
Working with 1 tortilla at a time, spoon 1/3 cup chicken mixture down center; roll up and place seam side down in 13x9 baking dish coated in non-stick spray. Pour remaining sauce over top; sprinkle with any remaining cheese. Cover dish with non-stick foil. Bake 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven, uncover and bake 20 minutes longer, or until sauce bubbles around edges and cheese has melted.
To serve: sprinkle with some of the lettuce, tomato, onion, and dollop of sour cream
Also nice to serve with: refried beans (one 16 oz can heated in oven) and cooked rice.
Enjoy!
Quote of the night from my soon to be 15 year old niece and Rachel Ray wanna be: "Oh Aunt Val, you MUST give me this recipe". She cracks me up!

game on
What's that?? I thought I heard someone challenge me for a game of Wii bowling. All I can say is, "bring it!".Can you identify some of the games we were playing? There are 5 distinct games being played within all of that silliness.
family reunion
Like visiting and catching up with everyone...
Playing cornhole (Uncle Danny and Uncle Tim, a.k.a. Colonel Sanders)...
Golf/chipping practice (Uncle David {all the way from NC!}, Uncle Mike, Great Uncle John, and Gary)...
Walking around and visiting (cousin Mallory and her mom, Aunt Suzi)...
Gabfest (2nd cousin Colleen, Mom, Michael, G.U. John, and 2nd cousin Kristie)...
Cooling off in the pool (soon-to-be new cousins Julia and Bugga, and cousin Maggie)...
More coolin' off with Michael and Mom in the mix...
We had to leave right when the big family pics were being taken, so I don't have any pics of that...boo-hoo! I also didn't get any shots of Uncle Bill and Aunt Donna, cousin Tyler, 2nd cousin Kathy and her family, Aunt Rose, cousin William, and (almost) Aunt Jo - oy vey!! We were so pressed for time to get Michael to his final baseball game of the season and the awards presentation after the game...15 minutes to make it from Westerville to Dublin...NP with Gary driving! Safely, of course. :)
The gathering was such a good time, G.U. John requested that we all get together again as one big extended family. Aunt Rose thought we could shoot for Labor Day next year and make it a tradition. Sounds good to me!
